HICKORY – Alexander, Burke, Catawba and Caldwell counties will come together to raise awareness and remember drug overdose victims for National Overdose Awareness Day on Thursday.At a national level, close to 35,000 people died from overdosing on opioids in 2015, according to a report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and earlier this month, President Donald Trump declared opioid abuse a national emergency.As for Hickory, Catawba County Public Health reports opioid related overdoses increased by 19 percent in Catawba County between 2008 and 2016.To help combat the epidemic and break the stigma, Unifour communities are coming together to raise awareness.The event, Hope: National Overdose Awareness Day, will begin at 6 p.m. at Bass Smith Funeral Home’s rear parking lot located at 334 Second St. NW, in Hickory. There will be guest speakers, testimonials, musical guests, including gospel group, Devotions, and light refreshments.People are encouraged to bring their own chair and a photo of a loved one they’ve lost to an overdose.
